Since 2012, 11 October has been marked as the International Day of the Girl. The day aims to highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face, while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights (un.org)
International Day of the Girl Child aims to recognize the rights of women and girls as human rights. In many parts of sub-Saharan Africa and not only, girls are forced to become child brides as a way out of poverty for their immediate families. Frequently girls also become primary care givers for their siblings while parents are working. That does not allow the girls to further attend the school or finish the school successfully.
Lauras’s story.
Meet Laura. She almost became a child bride due to family circumstances. Life Child intervened, so Laura could continue her studies at Life Child Peace School.
Laura is now a 13-year-old girl studying grade 9 and is from the neighbourhood of Namuinho, Mozambique. She lived with her mother and two brothers. She attended the Life Child Peace School since she started in grade 1. Laura was the best student in her class, she thrived thriving in her academics and the school environment! Laura’s father passed away due to illness and left Laura and her family in a very vulnerable situation. Her relatives felt it would help the family if Laura were to marry. Laura was only 9 years old but with the help of Life Child staff, she was able to resist the pressure of becoming a child bride. Despite the difficult circumstances with her family, she still wants to help the community when she becomes a doctor and give economic assistance to her loved ones.
Life Child is able to support children and offer education as well as healthy and nutritious meals, clinic, recreational activities and spiritual support thanks to your support, child sponsorship program and our partners.
We want to invite you to continue supporting the work of Life Child, so we can continue on helping young girls stay in school, so they can reach their full potential and change their communities and nation.
